The World's Oldest Continuously Running Arcade: Eight On The Break - located in NJ

As avid gamers and adventurers, the BryMax Brothers have always sought out unique experiences to share with their audience. In April 2024, they embarked on an exciting journey to Eight On The Break, the oldest continually running arcade in the United States. Located in Dunellen, New Jersey, this iconic arcade, affectionately known as "The Break," has been a cherished destination for gamers for an impressive 51 years.

"I grew up in here and even competed in big gaming tournaments in the early 2000's," said one regular customer Eddie Good.

Stepping Back in Time

Upon entering The Break, the BryMax Brothers were transported back in time. The arcade is a true coin-drop haven, where players still use quarters to play games instead of prepaid cards or entry fees. This nostalgic setup instantly reminded them of the golden days of gaming, offering a charming contrast to the modern arcades they frequently visit.

The Break boasts a diverse collection of both old and new games, with some even manufactured in-house. The sight of classic machines alongside contemporary favorites created an ambiance that appealed to gamers of all ages. The brothers couldn't resist the allure of the vintage games, spending hours reliving their childhood memories.

Meeting the Mastermind: Christopher Cody

A highlight of their visit was meeting Christopher Cody, the current owner of The Break, who has been a part of the arcade's journey for 40 years. Christopher shared fascinating stories about the arcade's history, recounting how it has become a beloved landmark where generations of gamers have grown up.

Resilience During COVID: A Community Effort

However, the arcade – almost became moot during COVID, when the business was forced to close for nine months. Facing financial hardship, Christopher Cody found himself in a dire situation with an impending $30,000 property tax bill. In a desperate bid to save The Break, he created a GoFundMe campaign. The response was overwhelming. In less than 24 hours, loyal customers and the local community rallied together, raising the necessary funds to keep the beloved arcade afloat. This heartwarming show of support highlighted the deep connection between The Break and its patrons, ensuring the arcade's doors remained open for future generations to enjoy.

Weekly Pinball Contests

The Break isn't just about arcade games; it's also a hub for competitive pinball enthusiasts. The arcade hosts weekly pinball contests that draw in participants from near and far. Their is also regular pool leagues that take place on a weekly basis.

A Culinary Delight: The Break's Full Menu

No visit to The Break would be complete without sampling its delectable menu. The arcade offers a full range of food options, from appetizers to milkshakes, ensuring that gamers are well-fed during their visit. The BryMax Brothers highly recommend the "BreakSteak," a mouthwatering cheesesteak served with fries and a drink for just $5.99. This hearty meal was the perfect fuel for an action-packed day of gaming.
