Kids Movie Review: Red One

This weekend, the Brymax Brothers headed to the theaters to check out Red One, the latest holiday action-adventure starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans. The film had potential, with a hefty $200 million budget and a star-studded cast, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite deliver the Christmas magic we hoped for.

The Plot

The story follows Callum Drift (Dwayne Johnson), the head of North Pole security, teaming up with hacker Jack O'Malley (Chris Evans) to rescue a kidnapped Santa Claus (J.K. Simmons). While the concept is fun and fresh, the execution felt lackluster. The film juggled too many subplots, and the pacing dragged in places, making its 123-minute runtime feel longer than it needed to be.

Visuals & CGI

For a film of this scale, the CGI was surprisingly underwhelming. The snowy landscapes and magical creatures looked outdated, and many scenes lacked the polish audiences expect from a big-budget blockbuster. The action sequences, while serviceable, didn’t have the high-octane flair we’d hoped for.

Humor & Tone

Red One tries to balance action, comedy, and holiday cheer but struggles to hit the right notes. Some jokes landed, but much of the humor felt forced and bland. A handful of curse words felt out of place and detracted from the festive tone.

Performances

Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans did their best with the material they were given. Johnson brought his signature charm, while Evans played the reluctant hero well. J.K. Simmons was a standout as Santa Claus, giving a heartfelt performance that added some much-needed warmth to the film. However, even these big names couldn’t fully salvage the movie.

The Brymax Verdict

While Red One has its moments of fun and heart, it ultimately falls short of becoming a new holiday classic. The Brymax Brothers rated it a C and recommend waiting for it to hit streaming services instead of rushing to theaters. With outdated visuals, lackluster humor, and a tone that doesn’t quite land, this is one Christmas movie that could’ve used more holiday spirit.

BryMan said as we were leaving, "It was OK", and I think that basically sums it up.
