From the official press release:
The Atlantic City Sports Commission in partnership with Pickleball Entertainment Consultants, LLC is thrilled to announce that the Atlantic City Convention Center will be serving up the Atlantic City Pickleball Open Indoor Championships on September 19-24, 2022.
Pickleball is a sport at the intersection of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It’s played with a modified tennis net on a badminton court, and gameplay lightly resembles tennis. In 2020, 4.2 million people played pickleball in the U.S., up from 3.46 million in 2019, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association’s (SFIA) 2021 Topline Participation Report, released in February 2021. That’s a whopping 21.3% increase from 2019 to 2020, the highest of any U.S. sport.
The Atlantic City Pickleball Open Indoor Championship has signed a three-year deal to hold the event in Atlantic City through 2024.
“There was no question as to where we wanted to host the world’s largest indoor Pickleball event. We enjoy the excitement of Atlantic City and all it has to offer. The local players have been so helpful, and we are excited to have them as part of our team to create an event the community will be proud of year after year,” stated Pickleball For All Executive Director Jim Ludwig.
"The team at Digital Wave Productions is delighted to work with Jim Ludwig and his team to produce the Atlantic City Pickleball Open on CBS Sports Network. We are honored to assist the Atlantic City Pickleball Open to bring their vision to the national television airwaves," added Digital Wave Productions Owner Ray Colaiacovo.
During a recent press conference hosted by the Atlantic City Sports Commission, Pickleball Champion Kyle Yates hypes up the sport:
USA Pickleball, the National Governing body of Pickleball will be an MMP sanctioned tournament with the Pickleball events being played on 42 courts simultaneously and include an independent stadium court which will seat up to 800 spectators.
“Pickleball is a fast-growing sport across the country, and we are fortunate enough to host this premier sporting event here in Atlantic City for the first time,” said Meet AC and Atlantic City Sports Commission President and CEO Larry Sieg. “We look forward to hosting athletes and spectators of all demographics to our world-class destination.”
Atlantic City expects to welcome more than 10,800 athletes and spectators for this event. Local Atlantic City businesses will be positively impacted by the activity throughout the destination, as the estimated economic impact will reach over $7.8 million. In addition, more than 6,000 hotel rooms will be contracted over the seven days of play.
The day of the press event, I dressed up to play, but wound up with this boomerang instead! Fun times! Who knows, maybe it'll be the official dance of Pickleball ha!
